The Chula Homa Hunt History

Chula Homa Hunt, whose name is Choctaw for Red Fox, began in 1980 as the private pack of Mrs. Alex S. Payne, Jr., MFH.  Our first formal opening hunt was in 1982 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Payne in Mississippi. Chula Homa Hunt became a subscription hunt in 1991 and was recognized by the Master of Foxhounds Association in 1994. We hunt in central Mississippi.

Mrs. Payne (Whitty) maintained the kennels on her property and served as kennelman for 16 years until 1996, at which time Karen Allred took over the duties for the next 5 years.  Cathy Nestler, our present kennelman, has served since 2001.

Mr. M.E. (Pete) Norman served as huntsman from 1980-1987. Mrs. Scott Skipper (Sue), presently a joint MFH and current huntsman, took on the duties of hunting the hounds in 1987 and became a joint MFH in 1988, as did Dr. Howard Friday, who served from 1988-1993.  Dr. Hildreth McCarthy, current joint MFH at Chula Homa Hunt began her tenure in 1997.  Mrs. Payne continued as master and subsequently master emeritus until her death in 2006.

Chula Homa Hunt’s largest fixture is the site of Whitty's childhood home. Her grandson, John Henry Jackson (who hunted with his grandmother as a child) and his wife, Meemie, are currently very active and supportive members of Chula Homa, continuing the legacy Mrs. Payne began.

Chula Homa currently has 32 members, 2 of whom are juniors.  Guests are always welcome and should contact the secretary if interested in hunting.  In the 2010-2011 hunt season 54 guests hunted with us.  Presently, there are15 1/2 couple hounds in the kennel.  Fox, coyote and bobcat are the game most hunted.

The 2011-2012 hunt season will be my 25th year hunting the Chula Homa hounds, for which I am grateful. I want to thank members for their support and friendship throughout the years. It is truly a privelege to hunt the hounds.

We work hard, we play hard, and a good time is had by all.
